Breeding for Markets Using Lambplan
Australian farmers produce lambs out of a variety of breeds of dams, in a range of pasture types and climatic conditions and for various market weights.
TRADE $ optimises fat at 0 and these rams are bred to produce lambs that have good early growth, are muscular and thicker, will have more positive fat and can finish quickly for the domestic market. IDEAL FOR MERINO EWES that are leaner, rear lambs during winter in less than ideal conditions and to target an early spring finish.
EXPORT $ optimises fat at -1.5 and these rams are bred to produce lambs that have high growth rates, moderate muscle, less fat and will grow to heavier weights more suited to the export market. IDEAL FOR XBRED EWES that rear lambs to market at different weights.
