Japanese Buyers Purchase Oakwood Suffolks

Total Livestock Genetics at Camperdown who co-ordinated the shipment approached Oakwood to supply Suffolks as the Japanese buyers were looking for high performance sheep that could tolerate the northern hemisphere climate and supply seed stock for the growing market in Japan for tender lamb.

The initial selection occurred in September 2016 and after four different tests for Johnes disease and quaranteen 50 ewes and 5 rams flew to Japan on 10th January.

Suffolks are renown world wide as one of the most tender meat breeds and the Australian Sheep Genetics Information Nucleus Breeding Programme comparing all major meat breeds resulted in Suffolk progeny being number one breed for tenderness and intra-muscular fat.

The Oakwood Tenderlamb Ram breeding programme was able to supply sheep that are in the top 10% of all breeds for tenderness.

All Oakwood Sires have the highest gene rating for cold tolerance and as it is passed through extended generations the purchasers were relieved that the sheep would be able to lamb in the extreme weather conditions.

While some lambing deaths can be attributed to specific causes such as birthing difficulties and poor mothering, approximately a third of them are associated with cold exposure and starvation.

Given that the weight of meat produced each year is more dependent upon the total number of lambs that survive to weaning, than upon the individual performance of lambs, is could be argued that lamb survival is an important selection criterion that should be included in all breeding programmes.

All the of Oakwood rams to be sold on property at Poolaijelo on Thursday 12th October have the highest tolerance to cold and nearly half are Tenderlamb Rams.
