White Suffolks Background
The Burwood dispersal provided the opportunity to purchase some of the best white suffolks where considerable time and effort had gone into breeding a line of sheep that carried extensive pedigrees and industry leading EBV's backed by years of breeding experience.
Oakwood purchased foundation females at the final Burwood dispersal sale held November 2013 where 107 elite 2012 drop ewes selected from a total drop of 350 were sold.
Prior to the sale Oakwood classed all the elite ewes for structure and type and was the dominant buyer purchasing 24 for an average of $933 including 3 of the top priced ewes to $2300 and 9 of the 15 that sold for $1000 or better.
Burwood White Suffolks was founded in 1987 and had a highly innovative and successful breeding programme resulting in one of Australia's best White Suffolk studs. Their greatest success in the show ring was Supreme Champion All Breeds at the 1998 Royal Adelaide Show and had achieved Australian record prices for stud rams sales and more recently achieved the top price of $21000 for a stud ram.
The average lambplan figures for the 24 ewe dominant traits were WWT 10.54, PWT 17.08 and CARCASE+ 197, which is well above breed average.
During 2014 an embryo transfer programme was completed using industry leading sires.
